I have always been a person who keeps trying out a new look on my hair or in general. I find it fun to make such bold choices hoping it doesn’t turn out to be messy ;p
I have really dark hair and sometimes, it becomes a pain to properly dye my hair, especially when the bleach damages my hair every time I use it.
Keep reading ahead because I will talk more about how you can dye dark wavy hair purple without the use of bleach.
Yes, I will tell you the exact process of dyeing with 0 use of bleach no matter if you want a subtle hint of purple or a full grape purple dye.
Just keep in mind that it depends on how dark your hair is. My hair is more of a dark brown shade and the dye shows up to a subtle hint of stealthy purple; but when under the sun, it is way more evident and cooler.
Preparation of Dyeing Dark Wavy Hair Purple
Hair Wash Prep:
What I did first was cleanse my hair with a sulfate shampoo to get rid of any build-up or excess oil on my scalp. It becomes a lot safer and easier to dye after a deep cleanse.
After cleansing out, I conditioned my hair so that the roughness shallows down and there is more nourishment in my hair. I kept it on for 5-7 minutes and washed it off.
After this, a pro-tip by is how I shampoo my hair once again after conditioning so that I strip my hair properly for direct dye application.
I used a microfiber towel and kept it on for 30 mins and then let my hair air-dry after removing the towel.
I would recommend letting your hair dry naturally rather than using a blow dryer because we are going to do that in the next steps, anyway.
Hair Dye Prep:
After drying out, I roughly straightened my hair out because it evened my hair for an easy application of the dye.
This process ensures that the dye is properly applied on all edges and sides of my hair without missing out a portion.
Also, do not use a heat protectant because it may cause the dye to not properly catch hold of the hair and show its effects.
Type of Dye I Used
I went for the 8oz bottle of the Arctic Fox Purple Rain because my hair is thick and reaches mid-back.
I would suggest that you too, go with the 8oz size because I am sure you’d rather have an amount of dye still left in the bottle than to be running out of it in the middle of the dyeing process.
I was a bit shaken out of worry thinking I would run out of the dye mid-process but it turned out to be sufficient for the entire coverage.
Please note that it is a semi-permanent dye and it lasts for up to 6-8 weeks properly and then you are left with subtle hints of the dye.

Preparing for the Dye Process
It is really important to follow the instructions on the dye packaging carefully if you are not using the Arctic Fox dye.
I would suggest that you do a patch test on your skin for any allergic reactions and if everything goes well, go on with the dyeing process.
I also applied a layer of moisturizer around my hairline which protected against any accidental skin dye.
Also, wear old clothes you don’t mind getting stained and then I sectioned my hair into manageable parts to make sure I have an even coverage for better results.
Dyeing the Hair by Myself
As I divided my hair into equal sections of parts, I then started painting/applying the dye on the front section of my hair first, as evenly as I could.
Then, I generously dyed my hair entirely to my thick hair and when I reached the tiny sections or the smaller parts, I was applying it a bit carefully.
I applied it well using a tint brush and made sure that I applied the product very well so that there is no patchy coverage.
Now, once all my hair was well-coated, I put my hair into a bun and let the dye sit by covering my head with a plastic cover. I blow-dried my hair putting the blow dryer against my head and let my hair sit for at least 2 hours.
It depends on the hair dye you use but this brand does not contain ammonia so I was able to keep it on for hours.
Hair Dye Rinse
Rinsing:
I wore a pair of gloves and removed the cap from my head. Standing under the shower, I carefully rinsed out the entire product from my hair for 10 good minutes.
Detangling:
After the rinsing, I quickly used a conditioner to detangle my hair. The dye acted like a deep conditioner but, after the wash, my wavy hair did require the need to detangle.
I properly applied the conditioner mid-length and kept it on for 3-6 mins and rinsed it out, but squished a little bit of the product as a leave-in.
Drying:
I let my hair dry naturally overnight as it is in general, the best method, and woke up in the morning, styling my hair with a gentle mousse.
Hair Dye Result and After-Care
My hair looked genuinely so cool and over the next few days, the color developed into a more intense color. It looks quite great in subtle light and under the sunlight, the purple color is very evident.
I would suggest that you avoid washing your hair quite frequently and always use sulfate-free shampoos and color-protectant conditioners to maintain the hair dye for a longer period.
Conclusion
I think dyeing dark wavy hair purple was quite fun and exciting for me but it is also important that you follow the steps properly for an even coverage. My recommended hair dye would be a great choice for hair dyeing.
If you are going for a different choice of hair dye brand, do read the instructions on the package properly before dyeing. As mentioned before, do not forget to do a patch test and use a sulfate-free shampoo as suggested and you are good to go!
